The Spafford Children’s Center of Jerusalem Al Madad supports the work of the Spafford Children's Center (SCC). Situated in the heart of East Jerusalem, the Center serves the needs of children in a catchment area suffering from overcrowding, falling living standards, malnutrition and associated diseases, economic degradation, and the tensions arising from the political conflict. The SCC is consistently under-resourced and under ever increasing pressure in the current political climate with more and more children desperately needing help. Despite these difficulties the SCC manages to maintain a consistently high level of medicine and care to its ever broadening catchment area. The Center is divided into paediatric, infant welfare clinic and prenatal, pyscho-social and special education departments. The Paediatric Clinic is the busy heart of the Center. Unbelievably, until recently one doctor was having to handle both the medical side as well as having administrative responsibility for the whole Center. To relieve this problem Al Madad has contributed to the salary of a second full time paediatrician - Dr Sami Nabulsi. The timing of the arrival of Dr Nabulsi has been peculiarly fortuitous, as since then, the doctor in overall charge has been a prisoner in her house in Bethlehem for most of the time. Without Dr Nabulsi the Center would effectively have been without a paediatrician!. |
