AMF Schools Programme
Supporting pupils and teachers in the midst of multiple crises in Lebanon
5000 pupil places supported since 2021
Lebanon, a country with a proud educational heritage, is beset by multiple crises
AMF is proud to have supported 5000 pupil places at Lebanese schools since 2021. Traditionally, 60% of Lebanon’s school pupils attend private schools, many of which are low-cost have a mission-based foundation. This project started in the wake of the financial crisis which meant hard-working parents in low-income families could no longer afford the fees, and schools were in danger of closing.
Over the five years of this project, Al Madad Foundation has supported eight schools in the Beirut area. After the invasion of the South of Lebanon in 2024, we streamlined our work in Beirut to three schools and started to help in Tyre. We always track our funds in the field and visited both locations in early 2025. This builds trust with our partners and facilitates a relationship which means investment can be directed as they would choose (to the greatest extent possible). It also means that we can be sure that we are not unwittingly contributing to the misuse and corruption that can feel endemic in education in the country.
It is hard to describe how heartbreaking it is to see proud families put a brave face on this crisis and continue to make sacrifices, year-on-year, to send their children to school. It is with hope that we all keep Lebanon's fine schools running; seeing children learning with their friends and enjoying 'normality' away from everyday chaos is a great reward.
