Pupils and teachers achieving in the midst of multiple crises in Lebanon
"Lights flickering in classrooms, fuel bills so high staff can barely afford the commute and salaries paid in cash - yet teachers and pupils still get up every morning and show-up to learn."
-Angie Garvich, Managing Director
We are in awe of the parents and teachers who are maintaining educational standards in Lebanon, a country with a proud educational heritage which is being beset by multiple crises. The professionals who have stayed (many teachers, nurses and other tertiary educated staff have left) still wake up in the morning with the energy and commitment to give pupils their best, in a country where it feels like everything is working against them.
Al Madad Foundation has, in the past, supported eight schools in the Beirut area. After the invasion of the South of Lebanon in 2024, we streamlined our work in Beirut to three schools and started to help in Tyre. We always track our funds in the field and visited both locations in early 2025. This builds trust with our partners and facilitates a relationship which means investment can be directed as they would choose (to the greatest extent possible). It also means that we can be sure that we are not unwittingly contributing to the misuse and corruption that can feel endemic in education in the country.
It is hard to describe how heartbreaking it is to see proud families put a brave face on this crisis and continue to make sacrifices, year-on-year, to send their children to school. It is with hope that we all keep Lebanon's fine schools running; seeing children learning with their friends and enjoying 'normality' away from everyday chaos is a great reward.
